Welcome back to Athens for the 2022 Black Alumni Reunion! Your Ohio University Alumni Association has planned a great weekend with activities for the entire Black alumni community. Join the conversation about BAR on the Bobcat Network.
Black Alumni Reunion (BAR) is a signature alumni weekend that takes place on the Athens campus every three years. The weekend features an engaging mix of casual and formal events — from networking and learning opportunities to entertaining and festive occasions. All programming is designed to welcome the University’s Black alumni and celebrate their ties to OHIO.

Registration is $15, with additional charges for some events. BAR is a cashless event, but credit card payments will be accepted on-site.

Thursday, Sept. 15
Location: Alden Library, 5th floor lobby
University Archives will have a special exhibit on display during the Black Alumni Reunion. Stop by to view historical Ohio University materials, including yearbooks, scrapbooks, photographs, newspapers, student publications and sports memorabilia. In addition, the exhibit will include photos of student life and historic event posters. Stop by between 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. on September 15 or 16, 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. on September 17, or 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. on September 18. During this panel discussion, students and alumni will share their stories about campus life with alumni also sharing stories about life after Ohio University. This event includes lunch. Registration costs $15 for alumni; students can attend for free.

College of Arts and Sciences will present a lecture by Visiting Professor of African American Studies, Dr. Uzoma Miller, titled "Standing on the FUNK: A Public Dialogue on Black Ohio's Legacy of Musical Pop Culture" at 1 p.m. at Bentley Hall 129. The lecture will be followed by a networking reception with light refreshments in the Bentley Portico (in case of adverse weather, the reception will be at Bentley Annex 2nd floor). “Come Walk in My Shoes” is a 2007 award-winning documentary that follows former U.S. Representative of Georgia, the Honorable John Lewis (January 3, 1987-July 17, 2020) on an emotional pilgrimage to the churches, parks and bridges where young people played a pivotal role in the struggle for equality and voting rights. At each location, Lewis reflects on his experiences and provides a forum for others – the “unsung heroes who cared deeply, sacrificed much, and fought hard for a better America” – to help us understand what happened, and why it happened.
“Come Walk in My Shoes” provides a fresh, first-person perspective on the non-violent protests that challenged segregation laws in the South and led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965. If you have any questions, contact Kelee Riesbeck at riesbek1@ohio.edu.

The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education (PCOE) will host an open house beginning with remarks provided by Interim Dean Sara Helfrich. A moderated panel discussion titled, The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education: How it Changed My Educational and Career Trajectory, will be held featuring graduates of The Patton College who have had careers in all levels of education, business, and the non-profit sector, with their core competency being their love for OHIO and how they got their start within The Patton College. The panel features co-moderators Dr. Salome Nnoromele, Ph.D., VP of Diversity and Inclusion, Ohio University and Dale Gresson, Executive Ph.D. Cohort 15 Program, in Higher Education, Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education. The panelists are Patton College alumni Ms. Cierra Boyd, Founder and CEO, FRISKMEGOOD; Dr. Robert Murphy, Dean’s Circle of Engagement; Dr. Ann Wagner-Hill, OHIO University Foundation Board of Trustees; Ms. LaWanna McKinley White, OUAA Board of Directors, Co-Founder, Ebony Bobcat Network, Ebony Bobcat Network Urban Scholarship Endowment, and first President serving 10 years; and Ms. Connie Lawson Davis, former OUAA Board of Directors member. The Russ College of Engineering and Technology has planned a panel discussion, networking activities and tours to welcome our alumni back to campus. Dean Maj Mirmirani and Senior Director of Development Tim Binegar will welcome you back to the college from 1:00-1:15. The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) will lead a panel discussion on the student experience from 1:15-1:45 p.m., followed by a networking reception with NSBE members and the Russ College Student Ambassadors. The Black experience in Athens began over 200 years ago. Ohio University students will provide some windows into it from early settlers and Ohio University’s first Black students to ongoing efforts at recognition and anti-racism, with many stops in between. This 30-to-45-minute tour will take participants around the College Green, providing an overview of important ways that Black residents, students, educators, and organizations have confronted systemic challenges and contributed much to the campus and broader area. It has been developed by Ohio University history students and is co-sponsored by the Central Region Humanities Center and Department of History.
