Session Descriptions
Environment, Peacebuilding, and Security: Exploring the Links by Dr. Geoff Dabelko (Environmental Studies)
Issues of war and peace are rarely discussed in connection to environmental resources and climate change. The challenges and our responses to them are treated as separate topic areas requiring vastly different tools to respond. Yet through a range of examples of conflict and peacebuilding around the world, we find connections, increasingly recognized by both security and environmental actors. The types of responses to both conflict and environmental challenges are often similar. In some cases, linking environment and security responses are even viewed as necessary to success. Utilizing examples from local to international levels, this lecture will look at the evolution of environment, peacebuilding, and security linkages for the past 30 years.

To Buy or Not to Buy: That Is the Question by Dr. Colin Gabler (Marketing)
As consumers, we make decisions all the time about what to buy and when to buy it. To drive customers to make more purchases, some retailers use scarcity (e.g., "Only five left in stock!") while others use future discounts (e.g., "Sale starts this weekend!"). When these strategies are combined, consumers are faced with a choice: buy now and guarantee obtaining the product or come back later and hope it's still there--at a lower price. In this session, we will investigate the risk and regret associated with this decision. First, we will engage in some experiments to understand the concepts of scarcity, pricing, discounts, risk, and regret. Then, we will investigate how businesses utilize these concepts in their retail strategy. Finally, we will discuss what this means for us as consumers.

You Are Getting Sleepy: The Effects of Sleep on the Brain and Cognition by Dr. Julie Suhr (Psychology)
In this session, Dr. Suhr will discuss the importance of good sleep to the brain, to daytime functioning, to cognitive abilities, and to aging well cognitively. She will present her research on the relationship of sleep to brain and cognitive changes in aging and suggest ways in which individuals can work to improve sleep as they age.

Encore Careers: Finding Meaning in Our Work after Retirement by Dr. Tom Davis (University Advancement/Counselor Education)
If you're like most people, managing the transition from retirement to the next phase of your life can be a challenge. This transition feels like a do-it-yourself project, with few guideposts and little support. And yet you're hardly alone. The largest generation in American history is in transition, moving beyond midlife to a new stage of life and work. Tens of millions of people between the ages of 50 and 75 say they want encore careers that combine personal meaning, continued income, and social impact.

Schedule and speaker line-up are subject to change.
